Welcome to our Strings Music Program for ages 6–17—a joyful, 8-week journey where young musicians grow in skill, confidence, and community. Led by Dr. Paul Konye, Professor of Music at Siena College and a celebrated musicologist, composer, conductor, and violinist with over 20 years of experience, this after-school program meets once a week from 4–6 pm for just $125.

Students at every level—on violin, viola, cello, or double bass—are supported through nurturing instruction in technique, musicianship, and ensemble playing, with plenty of opportunities for creative expression. Families can expect a warm, inclusive environment, helpful guidance on instrument sizing and rentals, and a celebratory showcase that spotlights each student’s progress. Program Overview

  • Duration: 8-week after-school program

  • Schedule: One lesson per week, 4:00–6:00 pm (two-hour sessions)

  • Instructor: Dr. Paul Konye, Professor of Music at Siena College—musicologist, composer, conductor, and violinist; over 20 years teaching and conducting the Siena College Orchestra

  • Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

  • Levels: Beginner to advanced; students are grouped by age and experience

  • Technique foundations: posture, bow hold, left-hand shape, tone production.

  • Musicianship: rhythm reading, basic music theory, ear training, and sight-reading.

  • Repertoire: engaging pieces from classical to contemporary favorites and global folk traditions.

  • Ensemble skills: listening, blending, following a conductor, and leadership within a section.

  • Creative expression: dynamics, phrasing, and opportunities for improvisation and composition prompts.

  • Performance readiness: stage etiquette, confidence-building strategies, and goal setting.

Dr. Paul Konye – String Instructor

Dr. Paul Konye, Professor of Music at Siena College, is a musicologist, composer, conductor, and violinist who for over two decades has taught and conducted the Siena College Orchestra, dedicated to nurturing young artists and inspiring a lifelong love of strings through expert, compassionate instruction.

What to bring

  • Instrument properly sized for your child (violin/viola/cello/bass)

  • Accessories: rosin; spare strings; shoulder rest (violin/viola) or endpin stop/rock stop (cello/bass)

  • Recommended: tuner/metronome app, folding music stand for home practice, and a notebook
