Theatre Classes @ The Madison

Step into a welcoming community where creativity shines and every voice is celebrated. Our 8-week acting and theatre program at the historic Madison Theatre in Albany, NY is designed to help students and emerging performers build confidence, strengthen technique, and experience the joy of bringing a story to life—together.

Guided by teaching artists from the Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York, participants will work as an ensemble on one shared script from first read to final bow. Along the way, you’ll discover new tools, supportive mentorship, and a community that believes in your potential.

Program Overview

  • One script, one ensemble, one unforgettable performance: Rehearse and perform a fully staged piece as a unified cast.

  • Warm, supportive training that welcomes beginners and challenges experienced performers.

  • A culminating showcase to celebrate your hard work with family, friends, and our arts community.

What You’ll Learn

  • Script memorization and analysis: Story structure, beats, objectives, subtext, and effective line-learning strategies.

  • Character development: Building backstory, tactics, and emotional truth; how to “get into character” and stay present.

  • Voice and speech: Breath support, projection, articulation, and vocal variety for clarity and impact.

  • Movement and blocking: Stage geography, physical storytelling, safe partner work, and confident stage presence.

  • Improvisation: Spontaneity, active listening, creative risk-taking, and thinking on your feet.

  • Timing and pacing: Comedic and dramatic timing, cue pickup, rhythm, and scene flow.

  • Ensemble skills: Collaboration, trust, empathy, and giving/receiving feedback with care.

  • Stagecraft foundations: Costume design basics, props handling, set awareness, and an introduction to lighting/sound cues.

  • Audition readiness: Cold reading, slating, choosing material, and presenting your best self.

  • Performance mindset: Focus, managing nerves, and building confidence from rehearsal to showtime.

Step into the spotlight with the Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York (BTTUNY), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the Capital Region. Founded in 2010 by veteran actor and Producing Artistic Director Jean-Remy Monnay, BTTUNY promotes performances and theatrical works by and about artists of color, fostering greater understanding, appreciation, and participation in the performing arts.

This hands-on, 8-week acting and theatre program meets Wednesdays from 4:00–6:00 pm at the Madison Theatre in Albany, NY. Participants work from first read to final bow using one shared script that the ensemble learns, rehearses, and performs in a culminating showcase.

What to bring

  • Script (provided at or before Week 1), pencil/highlighters, and a notebook

  • Comfortable rehearsal clothing and closed-toe shoes

  • Water bottle and an open, collaborative spirit
